Tournoux Landcare: Family History

Tournoux Family HistoryThe Original barn, built in the mid 19th century

The barn was originally built in the mid to late 1800’s on the family’s land in Middlebranch, Ohio. Throughout the 20th and into the 21st century the barn was integral to the family’s farming history. It was initially used as a buggy shed but was later converted into a hog barn. At some point, the barn was also moved from the north side of State Street to the south side of the road. During Aarons’ grandfather’s lifetime, the barn was used for raising livestock.

In 2009, the decision was made to tear down the historic family barn. This decision inspired Aaron to relocate the barn to his parent’s property and create a unique office and showroom.

Historic Family Barn to OfficeThe process of the barn being rebuilt at it's current location

Using current technology, the Tournouxs’ were able to modify the old wood barn into a very usable structure. They created a stable foundation using twelve inch cinder block stacked ten foot high and concrete poured footers. The barn office flooring sits on top of the ten foot walls. This height allows the company to bring in large trucks and equipment for cleaning and storage. The basement has radiant heat in the concrete floor which makes it usable year-round. This type of installation is a newer concept but is catching on quickly for both inside and out; it is frequently incorporated into sidewalks and driveways. When the heat exchange is on, the installation stays free from ice and certain amounts of snowfall. This technology is currently offered to Tournoux residential and commercial clients.

It took more than planning, hard work, and dedication to move the wooden barn, it also took an appreciation of the historic value of a barn that endured for over a century.  Both Aaron and Zach have the deep sense of devotion that is necessary to take on large historic projects, like their family’s barn.

Not only were Aaron and Zach trying to save the heritage of the family barn, they were also trying to show how Tournoux Landcare can rediscover the past and make it part of the future. They use this business concept, and are committed to saving and recycling any parts of your property while creating a new and improved vision. The Tournoux’s know everyone wants the backyard of their dreams, a timeless commercial property design; their knowledge in renovation and reclamation can help those dreams become a reality.
